Uncovering Energy-Wasters – On the House

Uncovering Energy-Wasters

By on June 10, 2014

A flashlight, a candle and a damp hand are three simple tools that can be used to uncover energy-wasters around the house.

Use the flashlight at night at the bottom of a door. If light passes through, so, too, can precious heat. An adjustable door bottom will do the trick here.

A candle is especially useful in identifying drafty electrical switches and outlets. Place the candle in front of the device. If the flame flickers, you’re wasting energy. Foam gaskets behind the cover plates are a perfect fix. Drafty windows can be remedied in various ways. Shrink-wrapped plastic on window interiors, peel-and-stick foam weatherstripping and caulking at exterior trim are all inexpensive means of dealing with one of the home’s biggest energy-wasters.
