Enjoy the Garden in Winter

The days are longer, the weather is warmer and it’s time freshen your home. Morris and James  are using their smart phones to get organized for spring cleaning.  And, while cleaning is top of mind, don’t forget the man cave and water heater.

Mirror, Mirror On The Wall

Panasonic’s Future Mirror

The idea: This mirror shows how different colors or styles of makeup would look on your face — or, for men, whether a mustache is a good idea — without anyone having to actually apply the makeup or grow the mustache. Unlike virtual photo tools with similar purposes, the mirror image isn’t frozen, but moves with you as you turn your head and blink.

Why would you use this: It could cut down on time spent sampling lipsticks and eye shadows , though, arguably, that’s the fun part of it — and lighting options let you see how the palette would appear in different settings. In addition, the mirror pinpoints wrinkles, sunspots and other skin imperfections and recommends products and lifestyle regimens to improve them, the efficacy of which you can evaluate by peering into the mirror later and seeing if it finds fewer flaws.

Where to find it: The company is in “discussion phases” with several specialty retailers that could install the mirrors in their stores.

Quick And Easy Blind Cleaning

Looking for a quick and easy way to clean your blinds? Forgo the special cleaning tools, and use this cheap trick instead:

What You Need:

White vinegar

An old sock or cotton glove

What You Do:

Place the old sock or glove on your hand, and dip the tip (or fingers) into a container of vinegar. Squeeze out any excess.

Run your fingers along both sides of the first slat to remove dust.3. Repeat on the remaining slats, stopping periodically to rinse the dust off of the sock or glove and to apply more vinegar

Benefits of Cleaning Blinds with Vinegar:

Dust adheres to the sock/glove rather than being released into the air

Inexpensive

No harsh chemicals

Safe for most surfaces, including wood, plastic and metal

Tips and Warnings:

Avoid oversaturating wood blinds –

Consult the owner’s manual that came with your blinds to see if there are any special care instructions

Does Your He Man Have A Man Cave?

Cleaning Your Man’s Cave

Although you may want to ignore the man cave or just use a blow torch because you know it’s a big (and potentially nasty) job, eventually it must be attacked.

Focus first on what you know to be junk.

Focus first on what is clearly garbage and shift it on out and have a tough love approach to so-called collectibles that need recycling, not displaying.

Check underneath just about anything that can be moved, shoved aside or peeled aside. Every piece of furniture in the man cave is fair game for trash hide n’ seek and possibilities for stuffing junk run deep

Look up. Junk may be hidden in odd places such as on top of high entertainment centers or even lamps.

Deodorize. You have no idea what is or has been living in this cave

Locate all used bowls, cups and plates, return them to the kitchen for washing

Pick up ancillary items.

Make a pile using a rake.

Organize, dust and vacuum. Dig into your pile of “stuff” and begin to organize.

Spring Clean Your Water Heater

The No. 1 cause of water-heater failure is sediment buildup in the tank. Sometimes it makes a sizzling, crackling noise when the heating element fires up as it works harder to heat the water. This wastes energy and often requires earlier replacement.

However, you can save money and extend the life of your water heater by draining your tank and flushing away sediment at least once a year. Here’s all you do: For electric heaters, turn off the power.

For gas, turn the control to pilot.

Next, turn off the cold-water inlet valve. Attach a garden hose to the outlet valve at the bottom. You will be running hot water, so be careful. Then, open a nearby faucet to improve flow. Once the hot water drains out, open the cold-water valve to rinse out the tank. Then reverse the process to restore normal operation, turning off faucets last

Also check your thermostat. It should be set at 120°F or lower. A water heater that might have lasted only 10 years could now last 15 or 20 years, or even more.
