Got a lovable pet bird in your kitchen? And a self-cleaning oven? Today you’ll learn how to protect your pet when it’s time to clean the oven. Here’s how and why: Almost all self-cleaning ovens have high-heat cycles that burn food residue to a crisp — literally. This process makes it easier to wipe it clean with a damp cloth or sponge. However, this extreme high-heat cycle also heats the insulation inside the oven walls which causes the oven to disperse any internal moisture and to give off various gases.

One gas is formaldehyde which is highly toxic and potentially deadly for little “Tweety.” In fact, many manufacturers’ operating manuals for self-cleaning ovens address this possibility of potential danger. Always remove pet birds before undertaking this function.
