Melted-On Plastic Wrappers

Jackie Gleason was born this day in 1916. As Ralph Kramden in TV's "The Honeymooners," he and his buddy Norton corrected sticky situations with ingenious homegrown solutions. One time Norton came over for breakfast and set a loaf of bread between Alice's new toaster oven and electric coffee pot. Both were plugged in, operating and hot! Before Ralph could snatch the bread away, the plastic wrap sizzled, shriveled and melted onto Alice's shiny new appliances. Looking at the gooey mess, Ralph thought his goose was cooked. However Norton was unfazed. "No problem -- happens all the time at my house," he assured. With that, he asked for some petroleum jelly, which he rubbed on the still-warm coffee pot. And he used a bottle of Alice's nail polish remover on the by-then cooled-off toaster oven. Just as he wiped the mess off each appliance with a paper towel, Alice returned -- none the wiser. And that's the On The House tip for today.
