Your toilet doesn't flush as it used to? It swirls instead of
working as it did when new? Recently we told you how to improve it by
cleaning the small water ports under the rim, which can become clogged
with built-up mineral deposits and can impede water flow and restrict
the flush. Try using a small mirror to locate and clean each one. Use a
wire coat hanger dipped in white vinegar and clean rim ports. If it
still runs slowly and sluggishly, there's something more you can do.
Down near the bottom of the bowl you'll find a small hole about an inch
in diameter. When you flush, it shoots a stream of water which starts
the siphoning action that begins a full water exchange. But sometimes,
like the smaller ports above, it too becomes clogged and needs cleaning.
If that's the case, try using a coat hanger wire or auger. And that's
the On The House tip for today.
