Plenty of Room at the Top

On this day in 1995, the Dow Jones Index of 30 major industrial stocks topped 5000 for the first time ever. That's a very good thing; but if you're climbing a ladder, reaching or exceeding the top is a bad thing. When you climb a ladder, exactly where is the top? Is it that big topmost "cap" step? No, it is not. Or the foldout shelf? No, again. Then it certainly must be the very top step, right? Nope, it's the second step. The top cap is for appearance only and small things like screws, nuts and bolts. The shelf is for larger items like tools and paint, but the step isn't for standing either. Anything above the second step can cause you to lose balance and tip over. So, step number two is step number one. And that's the On The House tip for today.
