Sink Hole Fishin'

Got a bathroom sink drain that's all clogged up? The problem most likely is in the curved pipe located just below the sink bowl. If you consult a home-repair book, it will suggest removing it, cleaning out the gunk, and reassembling it as easily as 1, 2, 3! Yeah, lots of luck. In reality, it will be corroded with years of crud, and usually self-destructs in the process, requiring trips to the hardware store and a half-day of pure frustration. There is an alternative: Before you start dragging out plumbing tools, try doing a little fishing. Start with a magnet tied onto a string; it might dredge up a thing or two. If that doesn't work, try poking around with a length of wire coat hanger; you might fish up the clog or punch right through. Drain problems? Some good old sink-hole fishing is worth a try. And that's the On The House tip for today.
