"The Fall Guy," staring Lee Majors as a Hollywood stunt man, made
its TV debut on this day in 1981. And while he could take a tumble or a
fall with nary a scrape or scratch, every day folks who do the same are
no match. With the holidays just around the corner, Uncle Charlie, Aunt
Jane, and the kids soon will be calling; with a little forethought and
care, we can prevent our loved ones from falling. Stairs are one of the
most hazardous areas in a home. On treads, both indoors and out, add
nonskid strips and light-colored tape to indicate the edge. Besides
slippery steps, poor lighting causes falls. To avoid fumbling for a
light switch or having a guest walk an unlighted path, install
motion-sensing switches and motion-sensor fixtures or bulb-socket
inserts on both porches and walkways to light the night. Check outside
before your guests arrive to ensure the fall guy will be on reruns only.
And that's the On The House tip for today.
