Jack Benny went from radio to TV this day in 1960. Famous for his cheapness, he was always looking to save money. He would have loved the following little-known ways to reduce the cost of homeowners' insurance without reducing coverage. Here are just a few: Today, on average, we spend $567 yearly for this type of insurance. While raising the deductible is one way to lower premiums, here are a few others. Linking your burglar and-or fire alarm to local authorities could gain a whopping 15 percent to 20 percent discount. Installing deadbolt locks is another; experts estimate that if it takes a burglar longer than four minutes to break in, he'll move on -- and you'll get another 5 percent discount by doing so. Other things, like key window locks and motion-sensor lights also dissuade crime. A loss-free record over time gets discounts, too, as does greater protection against severe weather. Toughen up your home and save money. And that's the On The House tip for today.
