The secret to handling household emergencies lies in planning ahead and being prepared. You must realize that such emergencies don’t usually occur during normal working hours. Plumbing is one area where planning can avoid costly emergency calls and a big mess. If you get a leak, first note the source, then shut off the main water valve immediately. Show everyone in your family where the valve is, and hang a tag on it that says "shut-off valve." Once the water is off, many small leaks can be handled by wrapping, or with applied pressure. Duct tape will often slow or stop a leak. If that doesn't work, put a rubber patch over the leak and add pressure by adding a c-clamp and a block of wood or a hose clamp (from any hardware or auto store). While you're there, also check out the ultimate plumbing emergency measure. it's called a sleeve clamp. It surrounds the pipe and is tightened with a screwdriver. Have a couple available. And that's the On The House tip for today.
