A 10-inch power miter saw is a handy tool for trim work, but sometimes its 5-1/2-inch-wide cutting width comes up a bit short -- especially with extra wide 6-inch baseboard and 6-1/2-inch crown molding. So what to do? Hand cut? Flip it over? To extend the cutting width from the existing 5-1/2 inches so it can easily make cuts up to 6-1/2 inches, here’s what you do: Clamp a piece of 2X6 board under the extra-wide baseboard or crown molding and it will raise the work piece up so the widest part of the blade makes the cut. The extra 2 inches of height -- which allows you to use the wider part of the blade -- increases crosscut capability by at least an inch. Wide stuff? No problem. Just raise it up a bit. And that's the On The House tip for today.
