Damaged Carpet?

Got a small rip, stain or burn in your carpet that'll be there forever? Those unsightly accidents are no longer something you have to live with. Plug them, instead. Hardware stores and carpet shops sell a repair tool that looks like a cookie cutter. It cuts a hole in carpet with two razor blades mounted on its bottom edge. The cutter itself costs less than $10. You'll also need a peel-and-stick adhesive disk and a tube of carpet glue. Both cost less than $10, as well. To make the repair, place the cutter over the bad spot and push down with a twist until you cut through the carpet (but not the padding below). Remove the damage and cut a replacement patch from a carpet scrap (or from a part of the carpet in an out-of-sight location). Then peel the adhesive disk and place it in the hole. Add carpet glue around the edge of the patch. Let it dry overnight and vacuum. It'll look as good as new. And that's the On The House tip for today.
