Wire Nuts

Doing home electrical work? When you are putting two or more wires together, taping is OK, but there's something better. When you've got "wire nuts" on your hardware list, you give connections a whole new "twist." Wire nuts are color-coded plastic caps with a tapered metal thread inside. This thread squeezes wire ends together as it screws on. Before using a wire nut, always twist the wires together to prevent one from slipping or pulling out. Pros also wrap wire-nut connections with black electrical tape in the same clockwise direction that the nut goes on to prevent it from loosening or "backing off." Another trick used where water or moisture is a concern is sealing the open end with a little dab of clear silicone caulk. Installing a dimmer switch or bathroom fan? Put a twist and turn in your plan (and maybe a dab to keep it dry). You'll be glad you gave wire nuts a try. And that's the On The House tip for today.
