Got a finicky recessed ceiling light that mysteriously clicks on and off all night even though bulb and wiring seem nice and tight? What’s happening is your fixture is overheating. Its built-in circuit breaker is shutting down to prevent fire and to cool off before re-setting and turning your light back on. It’s a common problem that’s usually easy to correct. The first and most obvious thing to check is the bulb wattage. If the incandescent bulb is too powerful watt-wise, it generates too much heat for the fixture. This trips the breaker and allows it to cool down. Remove the bulb and check inside to see if it matches the recommended wattage (usually printed inside). If OK, check the insulation in your attic. It might be covering or touching the fixture and again causing heat to build up. If so, trim it back and inspect the wiring for any signs of damage from excessive heat. Once done, you should resume having dependable overhead light all night. And that’s the On The House tip for today.
