Stopped-up Drains?

Today is blues singer Muddy Waters birthday. If you've got the blues because muddy water's standing in your sink, tub or toilet, try fixing it yourself before you call in a plumber. Your immediate problem-solver has a wooden handle and a big rubber bulb on the end. Sound familiar? There's a right way to use your plunger so as to avoid creating a messy blunder. Two common mistakes are not sealing off the overflow in a sink or tub by stuffing a rag into the opening, and not sealing off the other side of a double kitchen sink before plunging. Another method is to put a little petroleum jelly on the bottom edge of the plunger for a better seal. Muddy waters giving you the blues? Now you know what to do -- and how to do it right. And that's the On The House tip for today.
