Tip of the Day

Redrilling Holes

On "McHale's Navy," the crew of PT-73 was a little wacky, but also ingenious when it came to solving tough problems. Remember the day the skipper wanted a hole redrilled in the bulkhead to secretly replace a door lock he'd broken? It had to be in exactly the same spot -- only larger and not one millimeter off center. Precise positioning was essential or nit-picking Captain Binghamton would spot it. The crew thought for a minute and went to work. Seaman Gruber took out two hole saws, one the size of the original hole, the other the size of the new larger hole. While Ensign Parker mounted one inside the other on the arbor -- with the small inner saw sticking out just a bit -- the lieutenant grabbed the electric drill. With dual saws in place, he inserted the smaller one in the old hole to carefully guide it on a straight-and-steady course until the new larger hole was drilled perfectly. And that's the On The House tip for today.
