Planning holiday-weekend painting and fix-ups? Airborne dust can make a big, time-wasting mess. You can eliminate this problem by putting inexpensive plastic drop-cloth material over windows and doors. To make this chore easier for you, we'll tell you how to make a temporary tacker, so you can put up -- and remove -- plastic faster. Turn any staple gun into a temporary tacker by taping a stick from an ice cream bar along the bottom of the stapler near -- but not over -- the staple exit guide at the end. That way, when you begin stapling plastic around window and doorframes, staples will only partially enter, as each one is driven. This prevents staples from imbedding themselves flush with the surface. Instead, tops remain above the surface -- the thickness of the stick -- making removal much easier. This works well for posters and decorations, too. And that's the On The House tip for today.
