Fireplace That Smokes?

Got a fireplace that fills the room with smoke? You're in luck. Today's the great American Smoke-Out. When a fireplace doesn't draw air properly, smoke billows out into the room instead of up the chimney. This makes your living room look like an Indian pow-wow. Smoke continuously entering your room might indicate that the fireplace opening and chimney are too high. Try placing a layer of firebricks on the firebox floor to raise the fire a bit. The fire should burn high enough for the smoke to be drawn up through the chimney. If it still smokes, try adding another layer of bricks. Also, add a carbon-monoxide detector in your room. This will alert you to dangerous fumes from a downdraft or clogged chimney. And that's the On The House tip for today.
