Toilet Tune-up

It's National "Toilet Tank Repair Month" and today is part one of our "toilet tune-up" series. You'll learn how to detect sneaky leaks. Do you hear a dripping sound coming from the toilet, but there's no sign of water leaking anywhere? First lift off the tank lid and check the water level. If it is right up at the top of the overflow tube, the problem is likely a malfunctioning "fill valve", also called the "ball cock". If the water level seems to be normal, the leak is most likely down at the bottom of the tank around the flush valve, the "flapper." Check the opening it seats on for debris or cracks, and clean both the valve seat and the flapper. If it still leaks, pick up inexpensive parts and kits at your local hardware store and replace them. Stopping leaks saves on water costs too. Tomorrow we'll look at a bigger replacement in part 2. And that's the On The House tip for today.
