Tick-tock Trailblazing

When the wristwatch was invented in 1790, it was considered a novelty and used as jewelry for women. Then, on this day in 1880, the German navy ordered officers to start wearing wristwatches. Soon the fad spread to other countries, and today, more than 100 years later, almost everybody wears a watch -- all the time. But most do not know that their handy timepiece can also help them find their way when the sun is up and shining. To find due south, point the hour hand toward the sun; due south will be directly in the middle of the angle formed by the hour hand and 12 noon, and due north will be directly opposite. And that’s the On The House tip for today.
