Tip of the Day

Lighting the Great Outdoors

On this day in 1953 Samuel Bagno of New York City patented the first motion-detector alarm. Soon motion-sensor switches triggered lights, too, and a new era of outdoor security lighting was ushered in. Dual-spot motion-detector lights were popping up everywhere. New decorative models come with beveled glass and polished brass housings, and today's motion sensors are barely visible. There are also wireless models with sensors that screw into light sockets and units that turn on items inside your home. There are models with loud tones and warning “voices” and built-in mini-cameras to put intruders on tape. Another innovation that expands security lighting to places where electricity isn’t available is a solar-powered model. When it comes to lighting the great outdoors, check out what’s new, and don’t just shop price. Get the right light and take a big bite out of crime. And that's the On The House tip for today.
