When a stormy blackout occurs at night, you won't always have
emergency light. Nor will you necessarily have a lantern, or even a
working flashlight; perhaps, not even a candle. Here's a few ways to put
things right. From deep within the Carey Brothers' vault of shining
ideas, we bring glowing ways to shed some light. Indeed, says here to
strike a match. If you have only a simple birthday candle, you can make
it burn big and bright by pushing it into a jar of petroleum jelly with
just the tip sticking out. Then light it, and it'll burn for hours. You
can also make a long-burning light by pouring cooking oil into a glass
measuring cup and suspending a short string in the center as a wick. For
safety, set the cup in a shallow metal pan, light it, and the floating
string's tip will burn for hours. And that's the On The House tip for
today.
