Stick-to-it-ive-ness

Galvanized gutters and flashings will last a long time if properly maintained; the galvanized finish resists rust naturally. But, homeowners often want to apply paint for aesthetic reasons or for added protection against the elements. Unfortunately the properties that give galvanized sheet metal its endurance also make it a poor host for paint. Premature peeling and flaking can be avoided with these steps: First the gutters should be thoroughly cleaned with a ?galva? prep solution that removes any grease and oily films. It also etches the surface for good bonding. Applying a rust-inhibiting primer specially made for galvanized metal surfaces should follow. Then, finish off with a proper decorative top coat. You'll get the best of both worlds, the built-in protection of galvanized metal and the beauty of a lasting, painted finish that color-coordinates and complements your home. And that's the On The House tip for today.
