Got a house that groans and creaks? Floors that squeak and pipes that shriek? Houses can make multiple noises, 24 hours a day. Some are from kids and pets and doors opening and closing. Others are from various electronics and appliances. Water runs in pipes causing them to vibrate and sing. Heating and cooling starts and stops with clicks, hums and pops. And things expand, contract and turn on and off. Houses themselves are always moving, too. One side expands as the sun warms it, while the other is shaded and remains cool. Settling and aging are movers and shakers, too. Eventually you'll get used to hearing house noises, but be careful not to overlook or ignore new sounds -- like hissing, zapping or crackling. They could signal anything from a gas leak to problems with wiring or your water heater. And that's the On The House tip for today.
