Got a toilet that runs day and night? It's making noise and it's wasting water and money. Here's an easy fix to locate and stop that annoying trickling sound. Many toilets eventually develop problems that in one way or another allow water to trickle from the tank into the bowl. The result is an annoying constant "running" sound that wastes many gallons of water each day and many water dollars per year. Usually adjusting the refill tube or lengthening the chain on the flush handle corrects the problem and stops the flow. If it doesn't, there's a large drain-hole ring at the bottom of the tank that needs cleaning. It's a valve "seat" for the rubber cone-shaped flapper valve that controls the flow of water out of the tank. Over time, sediment and corrosion collect on this valve seat preventing the flapper from making a watertight seal. The solution? Lift the flapper and clean the valve seat ring with emery cloth or fine steel wool. If it's plastic, use a dish scouring pad instead. And that's the On The House tip for today.
