You return home and find several inches of water in your home. It's a wet emergency. Now what? Today, in part 3 of "Homeowner Survivor" week, we discuss survival after a plumbing leak. First cut off the flow by turning off the line feeding the leak. But what if the point that's leaking is hidden? Or there's no on/off valve in the line leading to it? Then shut off water to the entire house. In cold climates, the main shutoff is usually inside. In warm climates look outdoors. On wells, close the valve on the storage tank line and turn off pump electricity. If water covers electric cords or outlets, beware. It might be carrying electrical current. Shut down household power before making contact. Then mop and wet-dry vac. If sewage has leaked, avoid contact, and thoroughly disinfect. Then, provide plenty of fresh air and ventilation to dry and prevent mold and mildew from taking hold. Tomorrow in part 4 of "Homeowner Survivor" you'll learn how to outfit, outwit, outlast and survive natural disasters. And that's the On The House tip for today.
