You return home and find your front door open. You've had a burglary. Now what? Today, in part 2 of "Homeowner Survivor" week, we discuss what to do after a break-in. First, never use your own phone to call police. Thieves often make calls leaving fingerprints and a traceable redial phone number. They sometimes even watch TV and raid the fridge. So, don't touch anything until the police arrive. When they do, they'll ask for a list of what's missing. You'll also need this (and receipts) for your insurer. Once police determine the crook?s point of entry, quickly repair any break-in damage and immediately start beefing up household security. Most home robberies are crimes of opportunity; trimming back shrubbery, adding security lighting, locking windows and dead-bolting doors say "no" to crime. Tomorrow in part 3 of "Homeowner Survivor," you'll learn how to outfit, outwit, outlast and survive after a plumbing leak. And that's the On The House tip for today.
