You return home and find fire engines in front of your home. You've had a fire. Now what? Today, in Part 1 of ?Homeowner Survivor? week, we discuss what to do after a fire. First decide if you can handle clean-up yourself. If damage is extensive don't try. Call your insurance agent instead. But if damage is minimal, open windows and doors to circulate fresh air. Use a shop vac for dry soot and extinguisher residue. And use special dry-cleaning sponges to remove soot from ceilings and walls. (They cost about $5 at paint and cleaning suppliers.) If damage is heavy, call a fire and water damage restoration specialist. And if you have to move out for clean-up and repairs, board up broken windows, remove valuables and consider hiring a security service. Tomorrow in part 2 of ?Homeowner Survivor,? you'll learn how to outfit, outwit, outlast and survive after a break-in. And that's the On The House tip for today.
