Tip of the Day

Recessed Lights

If you've been looking for energy thieves in your home and updating inefficient electricity-guzzling old appliances, you should look up, as well. Those recessed ceiling can lights might be robbing energy dollars, too. Recessed lights or cans that fit flush into your ceiling are a popular and dramatic touch that provides versatile down-lighting, but they act like a little chimney, too, transferring expensively heated or cooled air into the unconditioned space above them -- 24 hours a day. The more you have, the bigger the leak. The answer? Purchase fixtures designed for direct contact with insulation. Airtight fixtures are also available and either will solve the problem. And, they'll pay for themselves in energy savings. If your older fixtures are accessible from above, they can be boxed with foam board to stop the draft. And that's the On The House tip for today.
