Zone Heating and Cooling

Tired of skyrocketing utility bills? Are you fighting mad over heating and cooling costs? Here's how to wage war and win with ?comfort-zone? strategy. Most homes have just one wall thermostat, and when the area it's in needs heating or cooling, the whole house gets it, too. (Whether it's needed or not.) A zone system uses several thermostats located in different areas to create level temperatures throughout the house -- or ?comfort zones? -- just where you want or need them. It's achieved by opening and closing dampers located in air ducts. Each zone thermostat is fully ?programmable,? and while you can have as many as you?d like, two to four is usually enough to improve comfort and to cut heating and cooling costs from 10 percent to 20 percent. And that's the On The House tip for today.
