Umbrellas: From Bad to Good

"Secret Agent" premiered on this day in 1961. Shows like this and movies like the James Bond series helped make many things trendy and popular such as martinis being shaken, not stirred. Another, "The Avengers," helped bring the ordinary umbrella to the fore, using it as everything from a deadly weapon to a fashion statement. Throughout history, umbrellas have endured a checkered past. Pharaohs and emperors in ancient lands used them for shade, flaunting it as a sign of royalty. In the Old West the umbrella invited physical abuse, but in the 1800s men soon came to their senses, realizing being cold and wet isn't cool at all. Today they are high-tech and are available in fold-up pocket size. And that's the On The House tip for today.
