Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone on this day in 1876 and as their numbers grew, so did the size of our phone numbers, from a couple of digits at first, to words and numbers, to today's 10-digit mind-benders with extensions, too. We live in a world of numbers. Most we understand, others we don't -- like those three numbers on plant fertilizer. They will tell you everything you need to know -- but only if you can break the secret code. First, they represent nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium in that order and how much of each is in there. Second, remember up, down and all around. Nitrogen, number 1, goes up for a healthy green. Phosphorous, number 2, goes down to the roots; and potassium, number 3, promotes all-round good health. Ask your local nurseryman which combination is right for your plants and specific gardening problem. Remember the code, "look up, down and all around." And that's the On The House tip for today.
