In the military, "standing proud" is a good thing; in construction it's not. In the latter case, it means that something is out of place, is not even, is apart from the rest. If something is "standing proud" like a drywall nail it's sticking up above the surface. When a wall stud or header is out of alignment it, too, is considered to be "standing proud." Anything that is sticking up, out or above plane is standing proud and needs attention -- pronto. Even a floor or wall tile can be standing proud. Drywall nails should be pounded down; framing members trimmed or planed and tiles leveled before mortar or adhesives set. Then you'll be standing proud (in the good sense) with a job well done.
