On this day in 1966 "Star Trek" made its debut. For years, Captain Kirk, Mister Spock and the crew of the Starship Enterprise have used nifty gadgets like phasers to battle Clingons, and beamed themselves up, into and out of trouble -- again and again. For 79 episodes and countless re-runs, their futuristic tools and clever ingenuity have shown many a mortal man how to operate in a pinch and how to get things done with technology. For instance, just by watching, we learned to "beam ourselves up" when working in tight, dark spaces flat on our back, needing both hands and some light. We simply take a low-tech empty soup can and stand the flashlight in the can -- moving and directing the beam to provide work light exactly where we need it, hands-free. And that's the On The House tip for today.
