Foil Ashes - Give Yourself a Break

On this day in 1981 TV's "Gimme A Break" made its debut, depicting family struggles and daily strife. The show's title also could be the mantra of weary homeowners and "honey-do" husbands looking for ideas and shortcuts to save time and effort, and to make life a little easier. When you clean ashes out of a fireplace, remove the grate and line the bottom with aluminum foil. Leave the shiny-side-up, replace the grate, and reload your firewood. On the next chilly night, your crackling fire will be warmer and brighter, as the shiny surface reflects more heat and light into the room. The next day, instead of scooping up ashes, remove the grate, roll up the foil and cleanup is done. And that's the On The House tip for today.
