Tip of the Day

Earthquake Preparedness

Say "earthquake" and people think "California." But the first major earthquake in recorded U.S. history took 100 lives and was in Charleston, S.C., on this day in 1886. Earthquakes happen anywhere and at any time -- without warning. No matter where you live, it pays to be prepared. Before one occurs, know where main-water- and gas shut-off valves are located, and keep a wrench handy. Store at least three days worth of drinking water per person and keep bottled water in your car and extra water for pets. Don't put tablets or cleaners in your toilet tanks. You might need that water in an emergency. Secure water heaters and bookcases to a wall and keep a supply of candles, batteries and canned foods on hand. Have a battery-operated radio for emergency information broadcasts at the ready. And that's the On The House tip for today.
