Tip of the Day

How Long Will it Last?

Today is Fred MacMurray's birthday. He played Steven Douglas, the father on "My Three Sons" for eight years in one of TV's longest-running family shows. In case you are wondering just how long things will run at your house, here's what the experts say about the life expectancy of some products. A wood deck should last 15 years, an asphalt driveway 10 years and a wood fence 12 years. With air conditioners, a central unit should cool for 15 years while a window unit will last only 10. A clothes dryer will dry for 14 years, while the washing machine will wash only 13. Newer microwaves will last you about 10 years. Ranges, both gas and electric, are designed to last longer -- about 20 years. More durable things, natural wood floors and slate and flagstone and ceramic tile, are expected to last a lifetime. And that's the On The House tip for today.
