Helmets and Safety Gear

Warm weather brings out kids and adults riding an array of bikes, skate boards and roller blades. Some are beginners. When one is not accustomed to the way new equipment handles, there's always a risk of injury. Beginners should learn the rules of the road first, and should have a good helmet and proper safety gear. Nearly all injuries are from falls. Helmets should sit low on the forehead and be level, not tilted back. After a proper fit is achieved, look for a test label from ANSI, ASTM or the SNELL Foundation. Chinstraps should allow one finger's width inserted. When fastened, you shouldn't be able to pull a helmet off in any direction. Never use one again after an accident. Kids might not do everything you say, but they will usually do what you do. So always wear a helmet and safety gear and set a good example. And that's the On The House tip for today.
