Kitchens of the Future

Every day technology makes our lives a bit better, and nowhere is this more true than in the most important room in our home -- the kitchen. In the future, the kitchen will grow even more in importance, from a place to cook and entertain to a high-tech command-and-control nerve center for all that happens in your life and home. Appliances will read bar codes when you cook, offering menu suggestions and seasoning tips, and will automatically order replacements from the store when you run out. Sensors will monitor their well-being and will tell you when they need repair. Picture phones will let you see whom you're talking with while you cook. And robots will set the table, serve food and pick up the dishes when you're through. Electronic noses will tell what spices you need and what wine to serve with the dish you've prepared. Scientists at MIT say it could be a reality in as little as 15 or 20 years. And that's the On The House tip for today.
