For many, summer means vacations and leaving home for exotic ports of call. But when you've off on a beach far, far away or riding an elephant in exotic Bombay, that's the wrong time to think, wonder and ask "Did I unplug the iron?" If you're planning a trip and something to do, be sure your home is vacation-ready, too. First, there's obvious stuff, like halting mail and newspaper deliveries, or setting timers to turn on lights and a radio and letting neighbors and the alarm company know you'll be gone. But, in the heat of getting ready, it's easy to forget things -- unless you have a checklist. Your "things to do" should help avoid potential problems like turning off the water and gas, unplugging appliances and resetting thermostats to save energy while you're gone. Do a full-house survey, and write everything down. Then the next time you travel just use it again. And that's the On The House tip for today.
