This week in 1865 safety-deposit vaults were introduced. Ironically, it's the same week as the Watergate break-in of 1972. Obviously, for hundreds of years folks have known, if you've got something valuable or important, or a secret you want to keep, you'd be wise to hide it from those who might want it, too. Besides having a safety deposit box or a fireproof safe box in your home, there are many things you can do to hide valuables. A favorite is the fake heating vent. Cut a hole between wall studs -- up high and away from other air vents -- and install a similar-looking vent cover. Shop around and you'll also find fake soda cans and fake cleaner and spray-product containers with false bottoms that can be used as secret hiding places in the fridge, under the sink or in a cabinet. They're hard to find for a nervous thief in a hurry. Think about it, and you'll come up with some of your own. And that's the On The House tip for today.
