If you own an electric drill, you know it's one handy tool. If you've had it for awhile, it's probably got a key-operated chuck -- that's the adjustable end that holds the bit. And chances are good that the key is missing. If the drill's in good shape, you can buy a keyless chuck-replacement kit and convert it for about one-fifth the cost of a new drill. Just open the old chuck all the way and remove the screw inside at its base. Be careful because it's probably a left-hand thread. Then unscrew the old chuck and remove it. Reverse the steps to install the new one. Then take it out for a trial spin. Grab a bit, twist the chuck and drill away. And that's the On The House tip for today.
