After winter, does your home look like a bombed-out building or a house in Kosovo? Do areas around windows, doors, roofing and flashing have holes and leaks everywhere that are in need of caulking? Spring is here, and if you know the law of sealing holes and cracks in exterior walls, you'll do it smartly -- like Perry Masonry. First, seal windows and doors with latex or silicone caulk to keep moisture from rotting wood and to plug air leaks. Then caulk wires, pipes and around the foundation. For large holes and cracks, stuff fiberglass insulation in before caulking. Use roof mastic under shingles and around flashings. Coat exposed roof nailheads too, to prevent leaks. Next, clean out masonry cracks, brush and vacuum. Then apply masonry filler with a caulking gun, and smooth with a putty knife. Finally, remove any loose mortar the same way, patch with mortar mix and let it dry overnight. Before you know it, the verdict will be in -- good as new. And that's the On The House tip for today.
