Ceramic Tile on Old Countertops

Is your kitchen counter looking a little beat-up with chips, dents and dings? And a new one with ceramic tile isn't in your budget? You can install ceramic tile on top of your existing plastic laminate counters. To do so, first remove the sink and protect cabinets with heavy paper or cardboard. Next, saw off the bullnose edging and backsplash. Then smooth out any uneven spots with a handsaw, belt sander and coarse sandpaper. Also lightly sand the entire top for a better bond. Apply thinset adhesive with a grooved trowel and install the ceramic tiles. Let it set-up overnight and then grout with a rubber float and damp sponge. When dry, buff with a soft cloth and reinstall your sink. And that's the On The House tip for today.
