Even if your home has smoke detectors, there are areas where you can use more protection. Fire, heat and smoke rise, so smoke detectors always should be installed on or near ceilings and in as many rooms as possible. Install them at the top of stairways, on every floor, in the center of rooms and hallways. Never place them in corners or near openings such as windows, exterior doors and vents. And don't forget the basement, attic and garage. To install a smoke detector, remove the cover and hold the base in place; mark mounting screw holes; remove the base and drill small pilot holes for each one. Tap in plastic screw anchors, replace the unit, tighten screws to secure the base, install battery and replace the cover. Then try the unit by pushing the test button. When done, test other units in your home, as well, and change batteries often. Finally, hold a lighted candle under each one to make sure they're operating properly. Buy plenty. They're cheap, life isn't. And that's the On The House tip for today.
