Burglar-proofing Your Home

Burglars are out there, and if you're not careful, you might be inviting them in. There are three types of these thieves. First is the amateur who specializes in crimes of opportunity -- anything that catches their attention like unlocked doors and open windows. Here, common sense is the best defense. Next are semi-pros who do occasional jobs. They know what to look for and know more tricks. Finally, there's 'America's most wanted' -- the true professional burglar. They're crafty, sneaky, smart and sometimes spend weeks casing a job. You'll probably never encounter a pro or even a semi-pro, but you can help to avoid all three with extra security and extra care. Make sure doors and windows are locked, and use motion-detector lighting. Homes are most vulnerable when you're gone -- for a few days or a few minutes. Don't let papers and mail pile up; don't leave a key under the mat; and do leave a light on at night. You might consider a pet dog who'll be happy to take a bite out of crime. And that's the On The House tip for today.
