Clearing a Slow-running Drain

If you dump hot cooking grease down your drain, it cools off in your pipes, hardens and starts hanging with a lot of other nasty stuff like coffee grounds, soap scum and hair. Keep a can or milk container under your sink as a holding tank for grease and cooking fats, and screen your drain to catch hair and soap scum. Put coffee grounds where they belong, on the compost pile out back. If it's too late, pour a half-cup of salt and a half cup of baking soda followed by a half cup of vinegar into the drain. Allow the concoction to sit for about thirty seconds and then pour two quarts of boiling water into the drain. For best results perform this at bedtime once a month. And that's the On The House tip for today.
