Home-inspector Clouseau

If you're thinking of buying a home, do some investigating first. Don't make a move without having a pro check it -- from foundation to roof, inside and out. Hire a professional home inspector to look into every nook and cranny, including plumbing, heating and electrical wiring. Have them check everything, both functional and structural. While costs vary based on size and construction, most home inspections run about $350 -- a small price compared to making expensive repairs. Get a detailed written report with suggestions and cost estimates for needed repairs. The best inspectors are those with some sort of prior building experience, such as architects, engineers or general contractors. Skip ones who offer to do repairs or who recommend someone who can. It's a conflict that doesn't work in your favor. Always check references and ask how detailed the report will be. Be thorough and careful. And that's the On The House tip for today.
