Installing new wall-to-wall carpets? Wondering what type of face yarn is best? Today in part 1 of carpet 1-2-3, it's fiber options. You get the most value when you match fiber, color and type of cut to its end use and the foot traffic it will endure. Natural wool is most luxurious. It's soft, durable and comes in many colors. On the downside, it's expensive -- costing $30 a yard or more, and it stains easily, often permanently. Synthetics look good and wear better than wool. Nylon, which is most popular, costs from $8 to $70 a yard for designer blends. Others, like Olefin, also wear well, resist staining and are comparably priced. Polyester, a plush synthetic often made from recycled soda bottles, costs even less. Acrylic fibers are mixed with natural wool to increase durability and reduce cost. Tomorrow in part 2 of carpet 1-2-3, we look at padding. And that's the On The House tip for today.
