Tip of the Day

Home Improvement Contracts

"The Dukes of Hazzard" debuted on TV this day in 1979. It featured two brothers always trying to stay one step ahead of the law. Recent storms and disasters more severe than most have contractors busier than ever (coast-to-coast.) Unfortunately, along with such high demand comes the usual gang who step in to cheat desperate homeowners when legitimate contractors are all booked up. To protect yourself, know the basics of home improvement and repair contracts and some 'when it's okay to cancel' facts. There is a "cooling off" law whereby you have three business days to cancel if a contract is signed in your home. (This does not apply if it started at the contractor's place of business and was finalized at your house or if it is for emergency repairs that must be made immediately.) The rule is for both phone and door-to-door sales, and you don't need a reason to cancel. A simple change of heart is good enough. Second thoughts? You have three days!
